Math Mastery School was created to help students go beyond memorization and develop true mathematical understanding.
We believe mathematics should be taught with depth, structure, and intellectual challenge — helping students become confident problem solvers and independent thinkers.
It is widely recognized among educators and researchers that Eastern European mathematics education — particularly at the middle and high school levels — produces students who are significantly stronger in mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and abstract thinking than their North American peers.
The reason isn't that the students are different. It's that the approach is different.
The Russian math tradition, together with the broader Eastern European approach to mathematics education, emphasizes deep understanding rather than memorization. In countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, and Romania, students learn mathematics as a discipline of thinking. They are expected to reason through problems, construct logical arguments, recognize patterns, and work independently from an early age. Mental math, multi-step problem solving, and proof-based reasoning are treated as fundamental skills rather than advanced topics.
The result is that by the time these students reach university, mathematics feels like a tool they've mastered, not a subject they survived. Math Mastery School was founded to bring the strengths of Russian math and Eastern European mathematics education to students in Oakville, while following the Ontario curriculum.
We teach the Ontario curriculum — but we teach it with the depth, intellectual rigor, and high expectations that define Eastern European math education.
